The VC-25A, a modified Boeing 747-200 that has carried U.S. presidents since 1990, returned President Donald Trump from Europe early Thursday before seemingly being retired. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung fueled speculation by posting a photo of the aircraft with the caption, “The Last Ride.”
The plane has served as a flying White House for multiple administrations, transporting presidents to major world events, diplomatic meetings and military visits.
Its retirement comes as Boeing works on two next-generation Air Force One aircraft based on the larger 747-800. Those jets are expected to enter service within the next few years. A separate Boeing 747-800 donated by Qatar has also reportedly been modified, though its future use remains unclear.
The new aircraft are expected to feature a redesigned red, white, blue and gold paint scheme selected during Trump’s first term.
While “Air Force One” technically refers to any aircraft carrying the president, the retiring 747 has become a symbol of the presidency and American influence around the world. Its departure marks the end of an era in presidential travel.
