Auburn Utility Poles and Power Lines Struck in Accident on Center Street

Auburn Police say a crash took down multiple utility poles and power lines on Center Street in Auburn, Wednesday morning, March 4.

The incident was caused by a single-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer striking a utility pole in the area of 901 Center Street.

Auburn Patrol Officers responded to a single-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer striking a utility pole in the area of 901 Center Street. Upon arrival, officers observed downed electrical wires and a transformer lying in the middle of Center Street. Multiple CMP utility poles had been snapped and were hanging across the roadway. Officers immediately shut down traffic in the area and worked with Auburn Public Works to establish traffic detours. Steven Gross 62y/o of East Millinocket, Maine, was operating a 2021 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer when he experienced a medical episode and veered off the right side of the roadway. The tractor-trailer struck a CMP utility pole, snapping it in half and causing it to fall into the roadway, pulling down a second utility pole and wires. Gross was evaluated by Auburn Fire and Rescue on scene; he was not seriously injured as a result of the crash.
Center Street is expected to remain closed for several hours.
