Bless her heart!
At 103 years old, Mary Hunter is proving you’re never too old to learn something new.
As she arrived at her birthday celebration, friends and family welcomed her with live music. It didn’t take long before Mary joined in. With a pair of spoons in hand, she happily played along, drawing smiles from everyone in the room.
“It’s amazing that she’s lived to be 103,” said her daughter, Janet Ely. “I told her she’s almost half as old as the United States.”
Before the party, Ely joked with her mother about the question everyone would ask.
“I told her, ‘Mom, they’re going to want to know your secret to living to 103,'” Ely said. “The answer is simple: be kind, help other people, take care of yourself, and eat healthy. That’s how she’s lived her whole life.”
Mary’s curiosity and determination have never faded. She says she refuses to give up, no matter how difficult something may seem.
“If I’m learning something and it seems hard, I get discouraged, but I can’t give up,” Hunter said. “If it takes me 100 years, I still want to learn it.”
And she’s already looking ahead to her next challenge. After recently receiving a ukulele as a gift, Mary says she’s eager to learn how to play—she just needs to find a teacher.
Here’s a story from last year’s 102nd birthday!
