The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a Publishers Clearing House impersonation scam.
From the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office:
A local resident recently brought a suspicious document and check to the Sheriff’s Office. It claimed to be from Publishers Clearing House and instructed the recipient to call a “claims manager” using a provided phone number and security code. The check—drawn on Citizens Bank in Miami, Florida—looked very real.
⚠️ THIS IS A SCAM⚠️. Do not call the number.⚠️ Do not deposit the check⚠️.
Publishers Clearing House has a dedicated scam warning section on their website describing this exact scheme. They never send checks or ask winners to pay fees upfront. Real winners are notified in person or by certified mail.
