Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro is expected to arrive soon, and this year’s flagship could finally deliver several upgrades that have been circulating in the rumor mill for years.
Here are three of the biggest changes reportedly coming to the iPhone 18 Pro.
- A variable-aperture camera
- A smaller Dynamic Island
- Apple’s own C2 modem
One of the most interesting upgrades could be coming to the iPhone 18 Pro’s main camera.
Apple has reportedly been working on variable-aperture technology for several years. Early reports suggested the feature might debut with the iPhone 17 generation, while analyst Ming-Chi Kuo later pointed to the iPhone 18 lineup instead.
A variable aperture would allow the camera to physically adjust how much light reaches the sensor, potentially giving photographers greater control over exposure and depth of field. Exactly how Apple plans to use the technology remains to be seen, but it could represent a significant step forward for iPhone photography.
Apple could also be preparing to shrink the Dynamic Island.
The company introduced the display notch with the iPhone X nearly a decade ago before replacing it on Pro models with the Dynamic Island beginning with the iPhone 14 Pro in 2022.
Reports now suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a noticeably smaller cutout, possibly reducing the Dynamic Island by roughly 35 percent.
The change would provide users with more usable screen space while moving Apple another step closer to its long-rumored goal of an uninterrupted, all-screen iPhone display.
Apple may also continue reducing its dependence on outside suppliers by putting its own next-generation cellular modem inside the iPhone 18 Pro.
After years of development, Apple introduced its first in-house modem, the C1, last year. The company is now rumored to be preparing the newer C2 modem for its upcoming Pro phones, potentially replacing Qualcomm technology in those models.
The C2 is expected to improve cellular performance while continuing Apple’s push toward better power efficiency and tighter integration between the iPhone’s hardware and software.
If the reports prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro may not completely reinvent Apple’s smartphone, but its combination of camera improvements, a smaller Dynamic Island and more Apple-designed hardware could make it a significant upgrade.
