A fatal crash occurred on Route 26 in Poland early yesterday morning, Jan. 9, near Cyndi’s Dockside Restaurant. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

From the Androscogging Sheriff’s Office:

At 7:10 am this morning deputies along with Poland Fire-Rescue responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 26 (Maine Street) in Poland by Cyndi’s Dockside Restaurant. Preliminary investigation so far shows that a 2018 Hyundai 4 door was traveling north on Route 26 when the vehicle lost control, skidded and crossed into the southbound lane and collided with a 1995 Peterbilt tractor trailer unit that was traveling south on Route 26.
The driver of the Hyundai died at the scene and the driver was not wearing a seat belt. The name of the driver is not being released at this time to allow proper time for family to be notified. The driver of the Peterbilt, Simon Couture, 39 years old, from Coaticook, Quebec, was not injured.
The crash is being reconstructed by the sheriff’s office and we were assisted by the Lewiston Police Department and the Maine State Police Commercial Enforcement Unit which is standard protocol in all fatal crashes involving a tractor trailer unit. Route 26 from Springwater Road to Aggregate Road was closed for approximately 2 ½ hours while the crash was investigated.
