A deadly fire on Virgin Street in Rumford early this morning, Feb. 4, is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The initial caller reported there were two people in the residence and one was not able to get out. During suppression efforts, firefighters located a deceased adult male inside the home. The deceased was later identified as 57-year-old Edward Vidito, who lived at the residence with his wife. The remains will be examined by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta. Mr. Vidito’s wife was able to escape from the home along with two dogs. A team of investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and are working to determine the cause of the fire. FMO Investigators were assisted at the scene by members of the Rumford Police Department and the Rumford Fire Department.
The Rumford Fire Department received assistance from several area fire departments, including Mexico, Andover, Peru, and Dixfield.
