The roads in Maine can be very treacherous during the winter, so the last thing we all need is a car with a roof full of snow hitting their brakes, and that snow falling in front of you while driving.
Did you know it’s illegal to drive with your vehicle’s roof snow packed. In 2023 Maine passed a law that requires you to remove snow and ice from the tops of your vehicles, so it doesn’t fly off onto a car following you, which, of course, could result in a crash.
Take that extra minute or two to brush off the tops of your car, and all windows, before driving away.
Title 29-A: MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC §2093
The operator of a vehicle with a registered weight under 10,000 pounds shall take reasonable measures to prevent snow or ice on the vehicle from falling off the vehicle while it is being operated on a public way. A violation of this section that causes damage or injury is a traffic infraction subject to a fine of not more than $50 for a first offense and for which a fine of not less than $150 and not more than $250 may be adjudged for each subsequent offense.
