The Kennebec Valley Community Action Program has launched a new fixed-route bus service connecting Fairfield and Augusta. It began on Monday.
The route begins at 63 High St. in Fairfield and stops at Kennebec Valley Community College before traveling via Interstate 95 to MaineGeneral Medical Center, Walmart and the Augusta Transportation Center.
According to CentralMaine.com, buses will run eight times daily, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The fare is $4 between Fairfield and Augusta and $2 for trips within either community. Reduced fares are $2 between the two communities and $1 for local trips.
Discounted fares are available to riders ages 11-17 and those 65 and older, as well as veterans, people with disabilities and Medicare cardholders.
The Fairfield-Augusta service is one of two four-month demonstration routes KVCAP launched Monday. The agency is funding the Fairfield route itself, while the Augusta-only route received funding from the city through the sale of its former police station to Developers Collaborative, which plans to build affordable housing there.
Officials moved quickly to establish the Augusta route in hopes of strengthening the developer’s applications for affordable housing grants.
If the Fairfield route proves successful, KVCAP will seek funding from community partners or the town to keep the service operating.
