30-year-old Mohamed Sheikh of Auburn and 23-year-old Keyt Hussein of Lewiston died as a result of a shooting on Knox Street in Lewiston on Sunday, Aug. 6.

On Sunday, July 30, 2023, shortly after 10:18 am, the Lewiston Police Department responded to a shooting complaint on Knox Street in Lewiston. One individual died on Knox Street and the second person died at Central Maine Medical Center after being transported from the scene. The bodies of the two victims were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where on Monday, July 31, 2023 a post mortem examination was conducted. The identity of the two individuals were confirmed as 30-year-old Mohamed Sheikh of Auburn and 23-year-old Keyt Hussein of Lewiston. The cause and manner of death for both individuals has been determined to be gunshot wounds and both have been categorized as homicide.
The investigation has shown that Mohamed Sheikh and Keyt Hussein were involved in an escalating feud in the days leading up to their deaths. Mohamed Sheikh located Keyt Hussein sitting in a parked car on Knox street and approached him on foot. Mohamed Sheikh met Keyt Hussein as he tried to exit the parked car and began shooting him multiple times with a pistol. As Keyt Hussein was being shot in the front seat of the vehicle, 24-year-old Mohamed Liban of Lewiston, was sitting in the back seat of the same vehicle and stuck a pistol out of the rear window shooting Mohamed Sheikh multiple times. The Maine Attorney General’s office has reviewed the matter and has determined that Mohamed Liban shot Mohammed Sheikh in defense of Keyt Hussein and therefore there will be no prosecution.
