Lewiston Police attempted to stop a vehicle in the downtown area Thursday night, May 28, triggering a brief pursuit that ended when the vehicle’s tire deflated after striking an exposed pipe.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:43pm. Officers tried to pull over the vehicle, but it failed to stop. The short chase concluded behind 240 Bartlett Street, where the vehicle became disabled.
A 14-year-old male fled from the vehicle and was apprehended by police. He was charged with Refusing to Submit to Arrest. The juvenile was taken to the police station and later released into the custody of his guardians.
Initial reports indicated that shots may have been fired during the pursuit. However, investigators now believe the loud noise heard by witnesses was the vehicle’s tire popping after it hit the pipe. Bullet holes were discovered in the vehicle, but police say they appear to be from a previous, unrelated shooting incident involving the same car.
The investigation remains ongoing and more charges are expected. No injuries were reported.
