A 48-year-old Brewer man has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 395 that left a 20-year-old woman injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 25, on I-395 westbound near the Main Street overpass in Bangor.
According to the Maine State Police, a black Ford Mustang struck a Volkswagen coupe, causing the coupe to spin out of control. The Volkswagen left the roadway, crossed the grass median, went over an entering ramp from Main Street, rolled over a guardrail, and came to rest down an embankment in the woods.
The female driver of the Volkswagen, a 20-year-old from Chester, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Mustang spun into a concrete jersey barrier in the median. Witnesses reported seeing its operator, a man, walk away from the vehicle on foot and leave the scene.
Troopers, assisted by local agencies, conducted a canvass of the area but were initially unable to locate the driver. A photo submitted to the Maine State Police 411-Tip Line depicted the fleeing operator and closely matched the description of the Mustang’s registered owner, David Harris, 48, of Brewer.
On Sunday morning, April 26, at approximately 7:40 a.m., troopers located and arrested Harris at his apartment in Brewer. He was transported to the Penobscot County Jail and charged with the following:
- Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Crash with Injury (Class C Felony)
- Aggravated Driving to Endanger (Class C Felony)
- Failure to Make Oral Accident Report (Class E Misdemeanor)
- Operating without a License (Class E Misdemeanor)
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
