A Tomhegan Township man faces multiple felony charges after authorities say he used an excavator to steal valuable copper ground wire from a Cianbro Corporation wind tower site in Moscow, causing extensive damage.
The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office reports the theft was first discovered on Monday, June 8, following a burglary report from Cianbro at their work site off Stream Road. The suspect allegedly transported an excavator to the location, used it to dig up ground wire from a wind tower station, and stole large amounts of copper. Building doors and fences were damaged during the break-in.
Cianbro security personnel assisted the Sheriff’s Office in identifying a vehicle and suspect. The investigation revealed that several other storage areas and buildings at the site had also been burglarized.
On Monday, June 29, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Sergeant William Crawford IV responded to reports of suspicious activity at the Cianbro site and arrested Alex Stanley, 37, of Tomhegan Township.Stanley was charged with:
- Burglary (Class C)
- Theft by Unauthorized Taking or Transfer (Class B)
- Aggravated Criminal Mischief (Class C)
The total estimated value of the stolen copper and the cost of damages is approximately $200,000.
