Punching a Handcuffed Woman Gets Maine State Trooper Suspended

A Maine State Police trooper has been disciplined following an internal review that found he used excessive force during an arrest in 2025, the Bangor Daily News reported.

According to the investigation, Trooper Jacob Murphy-Canto received a 15-week suspension for violating the department’s use-of-force policy.

The review found that after a woman, who was already handcuffed, kicked Murphy-Canto while he was placing her into the back of a cruiser during a September 2025 arrest, he responded by punching her twice in the face.

Although prosecutors chose not to pursue criminal charges, Maine State Police determined the level of force used was not justified under the circumstances.
