Should Learning Cursive Writing Be Mandatory?

The State House is considering a new bill, “An Act to Require Elementary School Students to Learn Cursive Writing.”

The bill requires the Department of Education to provide for regular instruction in and opportunities to use cursive handwriting beginning no later than grade 3.

The instruction must be designed to enable students to demonstrate competency in cursive handwriting by the end of grade 5.

Supporters believe research shows learning cursive writing is important to cognitive development, while opponents say a cursive mandate would just add to teachers’ workloads.
