The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office has shared the progress of their new garden project at the Somerset County Jail.
Sheriff Dale Lancaster explained that the project is about more than just planting seeds.
It is about cultivating community, education and resilience. Inmates in our custody are growing fresh, healthy produce that is being donated directly to local elementary schools. This initiative not only supports access to nutritious food for students, but also teaches the value of local food procurement – food grown in our own backyard, for our own community. We are deeply grateful to Somerset Public Health for their support through the “Move More Kids” grant, which has made this project possible. Their partnership helps us grow not just food, but futures.
