A high-speed pursuit involving a stolen vehicle ended Tuesday morning, May 5, with the arrest of a 30-year-old Benton man after a multi-town chase that crossed into Waterville and Clinton.
At approximately 8:21am, Fairfield Police were asked by Oakland Police to check the Mill Street area in Fairfield for a black 2022 GMC Sierra reported stolen in Oakland. Officer Bard, Captain Mank, and Chief Gould responded and located the vehicle. As officers arrived, the truck fled, driving erratically. Officers attempted a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT maneuver) to stop the pursuit, but it was unsuccessful.
The chase continued into Waterville, then southbound on the Interstate, where the driver crossed the median, drove the wrong way, and later turned around. Officers lost sight of the vehicle at that point. A short time later, the stolen truck was found parked in Clinton.
Witnesses reported that the driver had run into a residence on Canaan Road and fled out the back door. He was quickly located and taken into custody by Officer Lowell of the Pittsfield Police Department and Detective Lyman of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver was identified as Christopher Groves, 30, of Benton. He was arrested on five active warrants as well as the following charges stemming from the incident.
Groves was transported to the Somerset County Jail.
No injuries were reported.
