A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Monday morning during an immigration enforcement operation in Biddeford, prompting multiple investigations.
According to the Maine Attorney General’s Office, an officer with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was attempting to carry out a removal order when the man allegedly tried to flee in a vehicle and drove toward an officer. The officer then fired, fatally shooting him.
The victim has been identified by immigrant advocacy groups as a Colombian national who was authorized to work in the United States and had received a Social Security number. Officials have not yet publicly released his identity.
Gov. Janet Mills, Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain, and Sen. Susan Collins have all called for a full and transparent investigation. Sen. Angus King also raised concerns that the ICE officers involved were not wearing body cameras.
The Maine Attorney General’s Office and the FBI are investigating the shooting. Protesters gathered in Biddeford Monday afternoon following the incident.
