The Rumford Fire Department responded to a reported smoke investigation at 501 Virgin Street in Rumford, Saturday, May 1.
Fire crews observed heavy fire conditions on the first, second, and third floors of the duplex. One side was under construction, while the other side was occupied by a family of four and two dogs.
All occupants and pets were able to escape safely, with no injuries reported. The occupants were alerted by functioning smoke detectors.
The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation.
