The Maine Wildlife Park is mourning the sudden loss of Luvey, a cinnamon-phase black bear who died Wednesday morning.
Park officials said Luvey appeared healthy and was behaving normally during routine morning care before unexpectedly collapsing. Staff responded immediately, but she died within minutes. A veterinary necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Luvey arrived at the Gray wildlife park in 2021 after her previous facility closed. Because she was raised in human care, she could not be released into the wild. She became a favorite among visitors while helping educate thousands of people about Maine’s black bears and wildlife conservation.
Luvey’s death comes less than two years after the park lost another longtime black bear, Suzie, who died in December 2024 at age 30.
The Maine Wildlife Park cares for animals that cannot survive in the wild, including those that have been injured, orphaned or raised by humans.
