A fire at Chasse Marine on Main Street in Damariscotta Friday morning sent the business owner to the hospital for treatment of minor smoke inhalation injuries.
Firefighters responded just before 10:10 a.m. and found the building heavily engulfed in flames. A witness recorded an explosion during the blaze as crews battled the fire.
Officials said the owner was trying to move boats away from the flames when he was overcome by smoke. He was treated at Miles Memorial Hospital and later released.
Nearby businesses reported hearing several loud pops followed by a large explosion. The building is believed to be a total loss, though many wrapped boats on the property appeared to escape damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office.
