Maine Moose Lottery is Saturday in Acton

For thousands of hopeful hunters, Saturday could be the day they find out they’ve won Maine’s version of the lottery.

No, not millions of dollars. Something many Mainers might argue is even better — a moose permit.

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will draw 3,705 permits Saturday at the annual Moose Lottery Festival in Acton. The drawing starts at 1 p.m., but the fun gets underway long before then.

The two-day festival features everything from dock dog competitions and truck pulls to carnival rides, live music, food vendors and, because this is Maine, moose-calling contests. There will also be hunting seminars, a Labrador retriever demonstration and even a fry pan toss. Because apparently throwing a frying pan is a sport now.

For those looking to make a weekend of it, camping is available at the Acton Fairgrounds through Sunday.

Can’t make it to Acton? Parts of the event will be broadcast live on local radio stations, and lottery results will be posted online Saturday evening.

Winners will receive instructions on purchasing their permits and can even swap hunting zones, dates or permit types with another successful hunter, provided both permits have been purchased and the proper paperwork is completed.

For now, all that’s left to do is cross your fingers, practice your moose call and hope your name gets pulled from the hat.
