Maine’s new women’s soccer team will be called Maine Wildness. The club unveiled its name and crest Thursday at an event in Portland’s Old Port, attended by about 500 people, according to a Newscenter Maine.
Affiliated with the Portland Hearts of Pine, Maine Wildness is set to begin play in the USL W League in May 2027 at Fitzpatrick Stadium. The club says it considered more than 300 names and chose one inspired by Maine’s landscape and women.
Designed by Portland artist Pame Chevez, the crest features Katahdin, waterways, wildflowers and the red Dirigo Heart associated with the men’s team. Two-time World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist Michelle Akers has joined as a founding adviser.
Gov. Janet Mills declared Thursday the second “Maine Day of Soccer,” celebrating the new team. Maine Wildness will play in the league’s Northeast Division. The club expects to announce its coaches, players and opponents in the coming months.
