A new living-history attraction is taking shape in Machias, where volunteers are working to preserve the area’s Revolutionary War heritage.
Construction has begun on Machias Liberty Village, an 1800s-style reenactment site planned for a 94-acre property off East Kennebec Road. The village is expected to feature a meeting house, blacksmith shop, stables and other period buildings.
The land was donated by former University of Maine at Machias employee Gayle Kraus, who asked only that she be allowed to cut a Christmas tree there each year.
Joe Dowling, president of the Revolutionary War Reenactors of Downeast Maine, said future plans include a replica of Fort Foster, educational programs, and a spring house near historic Thaxter’s Spring.
Organizers are seeking grants and continue to receive support from local donors as the project moves forward.
