A video was captured by a security camera at Hallowell City Hall last week, June 9, that shows a speeding car narrowly missing a woman.
Fortunately, there were no injuries, but it is absolutely scary to watch.
From the City of Hallowell:
At the beginning of the video, two pedestrians can be seen walking along Winthrop Street. Shortly thereafter, the City of Hallowell’s Code Enforcement Officer exits City Hall and walks down the front steps before turning onto Winthrop Street. As she approaches the edge of the camera’s view, a red Ford Mustang suddenly appears traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle can be seen accelerating through the four-way intersection, striking a streetlight, and then veering onto the sidewalk. The vehicle narrowly misses the Code Enforcement Officer by only a matter of inches. Once out of the camera’s frame, the vehicle continued down Winthrop Street and through the intersection on Water Street. Along its path, it narrowly missed additional pedestrians and vehicles before finally coming to a stop near the bandstand. The cause of the acceleration was later determined to be a floor mat that had slid forward and become lodged against the accelerator pedal, causing it to remain pressed down. While the footage is startling to watch, it serves as a reminder of how quickly a routine afternoon can change. We are incredibly grateful that no pedestrians, motorists, City employees, or visitors were injured during this incident. The outcome could have been very different. On this day, the community was fortunate, and we are thankful that everyone involved walked away safely.
