Approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into the area of Durants Wharf in Cundys Harbor on Wednesday afternoon, June 24, after a bait truck breached a tank reservoir.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:00pm, at 901 Cundys Harbor Road. The fuel spilled onto the driveway of the wharf and flowed toward the water.
Local fishermen responded quickly, deploying oil-absorbing pads and oil booms to contain the spill while awaiting the arrival of first responders. Crews from the Cundys Harbor Fire Department arrived and applied additional containment materials to help mitigate the release.
Officials from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and local contractors later arrived on scene to assess the situation and begin removal of contaminated soils. It remains unknown how much diesel fuel reached the water.
The Maine Department of Marine Resources (DMR) has been notified of the incident.
Harpswell Marine Resources & Harbor Management is overseeing the site at Durants Wharf. Cleanup efforts are ongoing, and further details regarding the environmental impact are expected as the investigation and remediation continue.
No injuries were reported in connection with the spill.
