My wife tells me I’m too loud when I talk. In my profession, I wear that as a badge of honor but, as it turns out, I am not the loudest.
An Australian man has shouted his way into the record books.
Fifty-eight-year-old Joseph McGrail-Bateup of Canberra has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the loudest person ever recorded after belting out the word “now” at 122.4 decibels.
The booming yell topped the previous record of 121.7 decibels, set in 1994 by a Northern Ireland teacher who shouted the word “quiet.”
McGrail-Bateup, who works as a professional air conditioner cleaner and also serves as an honorary town crier, said the feat isn’t something you can practice. It took seven tries to set the record, and the effort left his voice hoarse for days.
At more than 122 decibels, his shout was about as loud as a chainsaw, an ambulance siren at close range, or a jet taking off.
